Chardon School District censures board member who monitored dress code while off-campus

The Chardon School District passed a resolution recommending additional training for Todd Albright.

CHARDON, Ohio — The Chardon Local School District passed a resolution on Monday night censuring a board member who monitored students’ dress code off-campus.

The situation began when Chardon Local Schools Board of Education member Todd Albright filed a complaint regarding the way district students dress. Shortly after, a concerned parent made a post on Facebook stating that Albright went too far and overstepped his job title by standing on a street corner off of school property and judging the clothing choices of students.

Sara Koch Haueter wrote that Albright’s actions were “not in the interest of our children, but in the interest of his own personal beliefs on morality.”

In a letter obtained by 3News, Chardon Local Schools confirmed that Albright stood on a corner off school property on multiple occasions watching middle and high school students on a busy walking route to and from school, looking for what he considered dress code violations.

The situation resulted in protests from students and parents ahead of Monday night’s board meeting. Others at the meeting spoke in support of Albright, who was elected to the board in November 2021.

At Monday’s meeting, the Board passed a resolution stating that it “disavows and expresses that it in no way condones Mr. Albright’s behavior and actions with regard to the aforementioned matters, as such behavior and actions constitute violation of Board bylaw, policy, and procedure and are indicative of Mr. Albright’s failure to meet his obligations as a member of this Board.”

In addition to censuring Albright and requesting that he cease and desist from such behavior, the Board “strongly” recommended that he attend and participate in Ohio School Boards Association training.
