Akron Amber Alert canceled after 4-year-old boy found safe; suspect still at large

The child, Fabian Claudio-Castro, was allegedly taken by his father after the suspect shot the boy’s mother. He was later ‘returned unharmed to Akron detectives.’

AKRON, Ohio — A statewide Amber Alert has been canceled after police safely located a 4-year-old Akron boy who was taken Monday evening following an alleged shooting.

Officers arrived at the 1100 block of Tulip Street in the South Akron neighborhood around 6:50 p.m. and found an unconscious adult woman outside. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and witnesses said they saw the male suspect grab his and the woman’s son before fleeing. Video shows the father grabbing the boy before getting in his car, according to authorities.

The child was identified as Fabian Claudio-Castro. Just over an hour after he was reported missing, officials say he was “returned unharmed” to Akron detectives.

As of 11 p.m. Monday night, the 24-year-old suspect Jose Castro was still at large. He is described as being 5-foot-9 and weighing 132 pounds with black hair and brown eyes and was wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts at the time of the alleged crime. He was believed to be driving a silver 2016 Kia Soul with an Ohio license plate number of HLD9706 and should be considered “armed and dangerous,” according to police.

The boy’s mother was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital and is currently in critical condition. Her identity has not been released.

Jose Castro is currently wanted on charges of felonious assault and kidnapping. Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts should immediately call 911.
