Relative questioned regarding 3-year-old boy critically injured after fall from Navy Pier into lake

Chicago police Tuesday were questioning an adult relative of a 3-year-old boy who authorities said appeared to intentionally push the child off Navy Pier into Lake Michigan.

The boy remained in critical condition at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, according to Chicago police.

The Chicago Fire Department pulled the Des Plaines boy from the water in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue, just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to police.

The unidentified female relative initially told police that the boy was “acting up” and that she “let his shirt go,” according to a police report obtained by the Tribune. Police located surveillance video that showed the boy crawling on his hands and knees looking over the edge of the pier.

The relative was holding on to the boy’s shirt and then appeared to push him into the water. The woman was being questioned, but had not been charged, authorities said.

At least 39 people have died in Lake Michigan this year, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.

Rosemary Sobol contributed to this report.
