Ukuleles take center stage at this Torrance festival

The small, yet mighty ukulele will get its moment in the spotlight as the Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival returns to the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Sept. 23-24 and The Grand Annex in San Pedro Sept. 25.

“It’s a full day of spreading the joy of ukulele and enjoying the instrument and hearing music of all kinds, all genres played on the ukulele,” said Victoria Vox, a well-known ukulele player and singer-songwriter, who is headlining the main festival event on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Cultural Arts Center.

Now in its sixth year, the music festival will include about a dozen professional musicians and kicks off Friday evening with a concert at the Art Center’s George Nakano Theater in Torrance. The show will feature ukulele stars Andrew Molina and Brittni Paiva.

Molina is known for solo ukulele versions of songs like Aerosmith’s “Dream On” and “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” by Guns N’ Roses, and Paiva is a versatile ukulele player who performs pop, alternative and even EDM music with her instrument. She has also shared the stage with guitar legend Carlos Santana.
